Penis curvature also called Peyronie’s disease, in which the penis become crooked when it is erect, occasionally develops in men. This can make sexual intercourse difficult. This disease most commonly occurs in men aged 50-60, but it can occur in young men also. Research shows 8 to 10 percent of men with Peyronie’s disease are under the age of 40. The disease is characterised by a plaque, or a hard lump that is formed on the penis. During the erection, because of the thickening of fibrous tissues one side of the penis cannot lengthen and the penis will bend. The direction of the bend depends on the position of the thickening.
Signs and Symptoms :
The symptoms of peyronie’s disease may vary from patients to patients. Some of the common symptoms includes
Shortening of penis – In some cases, the plaque develops on both top and underside of the penis. such development cause indentation and shortening of the penis
Difficulty in having sexual intercourse
Plaque – If the plaque is present on the top of the penis, it causes the penis to bend upward however if it present in the underside,it will cause the penis to bend downward
Painful erection
Causes and Risk Factors :
Scar tissue under the skin of the penis causes the curve. No one knows why the scar tissue starts. The scar tissue feels like a ridge or a row of tiny bumps. The presence of scar tissue make the penis curve more and more. The risk factors includes:
Genetics and age appear to play a role in Peyronie’s disease. Tissue changes lead to easier injury and slower healing as men get older.
Men with a connective tissue disorder called Dupuytren’s contracture have a higher chance of developing penis curvature correction disease. Dupuytren’s contracture is a thickening in the hand that makes your fingers pull inward.
Tests and Diagnosis :
If you think you have Peyronie’s disease, the first step is to visit an urologist. A physical exam helps your doctor determine if you have the condition. This exam may involve some steps : Taking the measurement of your penis. By measuring the penis, your doctor can identify the location and amount of scar tissue. This also helps in determining whether your penis has shortened. Your doctor may also suggest an ultrasound or X-rays to reveal the presence of scar tissue.
Medication – In cases of acute plaque, doctor’s prescribe injections with chemical agents to reduce the formation. It is used in men whose penis curves more than 30 degree during erection.
Nonsurgical option – Iontophoresis, a technique that uses a weak electrical current to deliver medication through the skin, is another treatment option for Peyronie’s disease. Nondrug treatments are being investigated, such as: shock wave therapy to break up scar tissue penile traction therapy to stretch the penis vacuum devices
Penis extenders – Traction based Penis extenders or enlargers are also used as a treatment for Peyronie’s disease. Peyronie’s device is specially created to treat the curvature of penis.
Surgery – It is the last course of action in the case of severe penis deformity. According to National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Clearinghouse (NKUDC), it need to wait at least a year before turning to surgery for Peyronie’s disease. Surgical solutions include:
shortening the unaffected side
lengthening the scar tissue side
penile implants
