urology Penile Prosthesis Implantation

For men with erectile dysfunction penile prosthesis is an alternative option for treatment. The device is either inflatable or bendable. A simple type of prosthesis is made of a pair of bendable rods which is surgically implanted inside the erection chambers of the penis. To initiate sex, the penis needs to be adjusted or lifted into an erect position. This is done after the implant so that the penis becomes semi-rigid.
Men are comfortable having an erection when he chooses and is much easier to conceal thus they choose inflatable, hydraulic prosthesis which is more natural. When the problem cannot be resolved naturally or with the other medical treatments and when there is a clear medical cause for ED a penile implant is suggested.
Penile Prosthesis: How does it Work?
Inflatable penile prosthesis is made of two cylinders, a reservoir and a pump which are attached closely. They are placed surgically in the body. These two cylinders are inserted and connected by tubing to an independent reservoir of fluid inside the penis. Under the groin muscles, the reservoir is implanted. A pump is attached to the system and sits beneath the loose skin of the scrotal sac which lies between the testicles.
Due to three varying components, the penile prosthesis is referred to a three piece inflatable penile prosthesis. A two piece inflatable penile prosthesis as the name suggest is made of two components namely the pump unit, combined reservoir and the attached cylinders. Within the scrotum, instead of a reservoir placed behind the groin, it is shared with the pump into one housing unit which fits in comfortably. The two piece prosthesis in the surgery is shorter, less complicated and no device parts are seen in the abdomen. In some men the two-piece prosthesis may not result in proper erection as it consist of a small reservoir.
The man presses on the pump in order to inflate the prosthesis. With the help of the pump the in the penis fluid is transferred from the reservoir to the cylinders. Thus inflating them and causing an erection. To return to its normal flaccid state and deflating the penis a deflation valve at the base of the pump is pressed. This returns the fluid to the reservoir.
Is the Prosthesis Noticeable?
A small surgical scar at the bottom of the penis where it meets the scrotal sac is a sign of men who have undergone the the prosthesis surgery. But someone else cannot be able to understand that he had undergone inflatable penile prosthesis.
What Is Sex Like With the Prosthesis?
Similar to the natural erection, when the penis is inflated, the prosthesis makes the it stiff and thick. Erection after inflatable penile prosthesis is rated less than their normal erection. Anyway, the new models have cylinders which has increased length, stiffness and thickness of the penis. Neither does it change a man’s ability to reach orgasm nor does it effect the sensation on the skin of the penis. Ejaculation is similar to that of the natural ones that a man experiences. However the natural erection reflex will be destroyed once a penile prosthesis has been put in place. Without inflating the implant, men cannot get an erection. Once the implant is removed, the man may not have any natural erections.
How Effective Are the Implants?
Ninety to ninety five percentage of implants give erections suitable for sexual intercourse. Literally, eighty to ninety percentage of men are satisfied with the implant and are willing to perform the surgery again.
