urology Treatment of BPH

Date :14-Oct-2019

Benign Prostate Hyperplasia refers to a condition of the enlarged prostate gland that is more prominently seen in men as they age. The enlarged gland affects or blocks the urine flow from the urethra. The reasons for BPH are still not clear, but if left untreated, the conditions can cause complications like a bladder infection, inability to urinate, weak urine flow, and bladder stones. The tests performed by the doctor to confirm the condition might include a urine analysis, blood tests, and rectal examination.

 TYPES OF TREATMENT

Based on the size of prostrate, age of the patient, and the level of discomfort, the kind of treatment will be recommended. Usually, the doctors follow a wait and see approach to suggest the treatment and monitor the progress of the symptoms. Mild symptoms can be treated by following simple lifestyle changes. For severe and bothersome symptoms, one of the below-mentioned treatment can be recommended which include

1. MEDICATIONS

If the symptoms are not getting better despite lifestyle changes, then the medications are prescribed, which include:

  • ALPHA BLOCKERS – These medicines help relax the muscles of the prostate and the bladder making urination easier.
  • 5-ALPHA REDUCTASE INHIBITORS – They help shrink the prostate and prevent the further growth of the gland.
  • PHOSPODIESTARASE 5 INHIBITORS – Medicines that are used to treat erectile dysfunction like tadalafil also have shown effectiveness in treating prostate enlargement.

2. MINIMALLY INVASIVE SURGERY

If the symptoms are severe and causing discomfort despite the use of medications, then surgery is recommended. Most of the urological procedures are laparoscopic that make only a few small incisions on the skin. Different types of procedures performed are

  1. TURP – Trans urethral Resection of the Prostate is the procedure that is used to remove the excess part of the prostate that is blocking the urine flow.
  2. TUIP – As the name suggests, the trans urethral Incision of the Prostate is the procedure used to make small cuts in the gland so that the urine can pass through the urethra without any obstruction.
  3. TUMT – Trans urethral Microwave Thermotherapy is a procedure in which a special electrode that emits microwave energy is inserted into the prostate. This energy helps to shrinks the enlarged gland.
  4. LASER THERAPY – The most common laser procedures used are Holmium Laser Ablation (HoLAP) and Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP).In these procedures, a high energy laser either destroys or removes the overgrown tissue.
